Ketogenic Intermittent Fasting (kIF) - My experiences after 2 days
Main resource for Intermittent Fasting (IF) has been at LeanGains and more specifically this post.
Most of the information on IF has been solely on a glycogenic diet, one that is predominantly carbohydrate orientated. But I've decided to try on a high fat, lowest carb diet; ketogenic Intermittent Fasting (kIF).
So far..
Now this is only my second day and as I write this I have gone 18 hours without eating anything - only drinking water. And amazingly I'm not hungry. In the morning of the first day I was getting a tad hungry which increased as time went on (body wanting me to bring forward my 1PM meal). But today, even though my last meal was 5PM the previous day (was 8PM the day before that), I'm still completely satisfied.
Unexpected side affects so far have been, more energy, waking up brighter and earlier although also getting tired more quickly during the evening (but that didn't last long), drinking more water. I went to bed at 2AM and instead of getting annoyed at my alarm at 9:30AM, I woke up naturally and rested at 8AM.. what's with that.
I haven't had any cream dreams (weird vivid dreams induced by dairy products) either, but that's to be expected as I used to have something like cheese or jelly & cream an hour or so before bed. Maybe that's why I'm more rested when I wake up, I'm in a deeper sleep more often? I'll use the Sleep Cycle iPhone app tonight and compare with before.
I have to tell you though, being in ketosis and not having serotonin-highs and insulin-lows really helps with hunger. When in keto your hunger is suppressed to a certain extent anyway (until your body actually tells you, you need food) so combined with IF it's so easy. This somethingawful thread details how hungry you will get without eating, but again this is based on a carbohydrate diet. I'm just not getting it on my ketogenic diet.
Whats next?
Well, it's only been 2 days. My body fat is around 13%, weight is 61Kg. I'm aiming for about 8-9% by the challenge so that's going to be a lot of timing, carbohydrate and calorie tracking, fasted resistance training and BCAA intake and more anabolic inducing foods (beef etc).
I will, however, post again in a week or so detailing any other effects kIF has had and my fat loss so far.

And on to another...
I always try and support start-up companies where I can and I tried. However good their support may have been (and it was great to start with) their servers were seemingly unable to cope with the influx. I think their business model of many customers, low revenue for each, was to blame.
The servers were fine at first, quite responsive. But quite early on my sites started to timeout, get random Error 500s, random connection cuts. Not good. I went to their site to submit a ticket. That timed out. Even worse. Loaded cPanel, worked fine. My site? Still timing out. So it wasn't even a network DOS.
Checking cPanel's server stats showed that the CPU load had gone *down* to very minimal (for that server anyway) which showed that something wasn't processing its queue like it should have been. Sent an email with this information and they restarted apache - everything's working again.
I have just counted 8 separate emails in my Shared9 Googlemail label for "Downtime". That's at least 8 times my site (and theirs) has gone down in the last 40 days. The average response has been;
Hi,
Our team is on this, an account is using a large amount of CPU and this will be resolved asap.
Sorry for the issue.
Sometimes even ranging to;
Hi,
Your website appears to load fine our end and in our USA side as well. Our site shows no timeout currently.
We will run some more tests but things seem to be ok. Can you empty your cache & restart your browser please to try again.
Thank you.
One thing that does considerably bug me is that they put their own site on the customers' server. When I was in the business I kept our site in a different datacentre with a different provider and with a backup status site in a different country (US). Having your site, including the support side of it on the same server is a bit stupid in my book. Usually customers want to use the support when something is going wrong. In this instance as per my experience when something goes wrong you can't tell anyone about it. What's worse is that if you hadn't already jotted down their support email you wouldn't have been able to tell them that way either - because the address was only written on their site.
Ranting? Me. Kind of. I do appreciate their support response times and how quickly they have managed to sort out the problems. but unfortunately they were just not few enough for me.
So onto another host. Who this time? StableHost.
I was intrigued by their Webhosting Talk special offer thread which had 16 pages of nothing but praise for them. Their support times are in PST but that's ok. I sent them a sales query as I always do to test their knowledge and response time and even though the sales department starts at 9AM, I got an email back at just gone 6:30AM PST.
I decided to give them a try. The signup and installation process was what I had come accustomed to from WHMCS. Everything was going well (no, there's no but..).
The server I am on is using litespeed and it's great. Pages are really really quick. The network latency to the server (in Frankfurt, Germany) is on average 40ms for me, compared to the 18-20ms at Shared9 but it didn't make a difference, the transfer speeds were very high (10Mb/s compared to 500Kb/s at Shared9) and the page loading times were crazy, about what I used to have on my own server.
PHP and MySQL time were weirdly set to GMT-4 (SELECT NOW();) so an email to support had Tyler come back within 6 minutes saying that he had changed it to GMT for me. Now I know MySQL can't have it changed on a node-by-node basis, has to be the entire server so they changed it server-wide for me. Nice.
cPanel stats are showing an average load of around 0.05-0.1 compared to Shared9's 2-5; actual pastes are below.
| Server Load | 4.85 (8 cpus) | |
| Memory Used | 33.6 % | |
| Swap Used | 3.69 % |
| Server Load | 0.02 (8 cpus) | |
| Memory Used | 7.5 % | |
| Swap Used | 0 % |

Turning off Magic Quotes on cPanel
This is actually quite easy. magic_quotes_gpc can't be turned off at runtime (which means no ini_set).
Therefore you must put a php.ini file inside your root (highest) directory (/home/myusername/) and as it's contents type;
[PHP]
magic_quotes_gpc = Off
Don't worry about making sure all of the other variables are in the file, they will all fall back to the current server-wide php.ini file, so you only need to type the variables you want to change.
Or in .htaccess file within your /public_html/ folder
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off
It's that simple.

My reviews on Web Providers
Okay, I know. "Web Providers" is a bit ambiguous but this includes the web hosts, colocation providers, uplink providers etc that I have used before.
NetrinoUK Ltd

Rating: 3/10

Poundhost.com
Rating: (10/10)
Outstanding. Their support has always responded within minutes. I mean, 1 or 2 minutes. And it's an actual person. I know!
Server reboots, remote hands.. it's dealt with professionally and again, within minutes - 24 hours a day!
They've merged, been bought out and what-not but it's still the same. The network has been getting stronger and more resilient since I have been with them. The speeds are great, latency is great. Access to the datacentres is easy - you can't miss those big blue gates.
All in all, there's not much to write about because they're so good. If there was something bad, I could rant on for a while (See my NetrinoUK Ltd post). Thoroughly recommend.
Shared9.com

I've just started with them, this week in fact. My Shared9 starting experience goes into a bit more detail. I'll post when I have been with them a bit longer.

Just because they are my home internet provider doesn't mean they escape my wrath.
I have been with VM for donkeys. Way back when they only had dial up and 4letter-5number usernames. We were one of the first in the region to get the new coaxial-to-fibre service, which is now so mainstream noone cares to think about it.
Let me get down to the nitty-gritty. They are brilliant! They aren't without fault - but they are still excellent. At the moment I am having a lot of trouble with connection drop outs and packetloss, which I would have given a rating of 5/10 for, but no, I have a network tech's mobile number and I am texting him whenever it goes down. He's passing it straight to the outage and monitoring team and they send out techs to replace hardware in the green boxes.
The problem I have been having has actually been annoying for them, the amount of techs I have had out replacing everything is unbelievable. Usually you just get the home techs, but being in direct contact with a network tech who can monitor quadrants from his station a few miles away actually makes me feel good.
Why am I only going on about that? I don't know. I'll stop.
The rest of their network for me is excellent. I am on 50Mb service and I actually get 50Mb (when I don't get a period of packetloss -- sorry). I've never really seen a problem with getting that speed either. Downloading games on steam and letting my friends know when it's finished is very pleasing.
As for their traffic shaping, well I don't get that on the 50Mb service, I can download as much as I want. Others on the lower services aren't so fortunate, they get 'STM'd which gives them really sucky upload speeds, which in turn gets saturated and lowers the download speed. At least they can carry on downloading, unlike the caps that other companies have. I can't complain.

I'll give Kris and his team a good write up tomorrow some time, after I've been to BlueSquare to pick up our equipment.
